The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office reported the death of two people after a wrong-way head-on crash that happened on I-25 early on Saturday morning. According to the officials the fatal I-25 accident happened around 2:00 a.m. on southbound I-25, north of Tramway.
When Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies came at the scene, they discovered a black Ford F-150 pickup and a black GMC Yukon damaged from the crash. The GMC was rolled over onto the driver’s side. Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office shut down all lanes of traffic after the accident.
A witness of the fatal I-25 accident told deputies the pickup was going northbound in the southbound lanes of I-25 with turned off headlights and directly hit the GMC. The driver of the GMC had severe injuries and was taken to UNM Hospital, according to a criminal complaint. Two passengers of the GMC were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the F-150 was identified as twenty-nine-year-old Brandon Roybal Barber. Barber is a probationary police officer with Cuba police, Cuba Police Chief Manuel Romero has confirmed. Barber was put on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
The complaint says Barber was found by deputies walking disorientedly around the scene. DWI deputies think that Barber was impaired. Barber took a field sobriety test during which he stopped and asked to be taken to a hospital. The deputies found a half-full bottle of alcohol in Barber’s truck. He has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide, aggravated DWI, and possession of an open container.
