Karen grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is proud to be home and serving the community. Karen focuses on federal and appellate law. In addition, she practices plaintiff’s injury, employment discrimination, civil rights, Indian law, and criminal defense. Karen regularly presents at continuing legal education seminars, training classes for public interest organizations, and other social advocacy conferences.

Karen earned her Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School, where she served as an executive committee member of the Yale Law Journal and helped non-profit associations litigate in courts around the country for clinic. She started her legal career as a law clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

After her clerkships, Karen worked as an associate in the National Appellate Section for King & Spalding in Washington, D.C. She worked on cases across the country, including in the U.S. Supreme Court. Her clients included Chevron, Google, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Joe Paterno, and the Governor of New Mexico. She also worked on behalf of prisoners, authoring a winning brief in a district court in Virginia, and arguing a case on appeal in front of the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco, California. Karen earned the Pro Bono Service Award for her advocacy.

Karen then moved back to Albuquerque to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Department of Justice. She represented the United States in defensive civil litigation, handling civil rights, employment discrimination, personal injury, environmental law, and Indian law cases. She also represented individuals in civil rights cases. She practiced extensively before the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2017, Karen co-founded Henderson & Grohman, PC, along with Shammara Henderson. In 2018, she joined Freedman Boyd where she continues to practice civil litigation and criminal defense.

Karen is admitted to practice in New Mexico and the District of Columbia.

RECENT NEWS

Freedman Boyd Hollander Goldberg Urias & Ward P.A. lawyers were successful in obtaining Presidential clemency for their client, Chelsea Manning, which reduced her sentence from 35 years to 7 years and resulted in her release and continue to represent Ms. Manning in the underlying appeal of her conviction in the military courts.
