Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting in Las Cruces

The Las Cruces Police Department and the Dona Ana County Officer-Involved Incident Task Force are investigating a shooting incident that led to the death of one man. The shooting in Las Cruces happened on Saturday, October 9th.

According to a press release by the Las Cruces Police Department, an officer initiated a traffic stop at 5th Street and Wilson Avenue. The preliminary investigation showed that the driver came to an abrupt stop and opened fire, shooting at least one round at officers in the two-person police unit. Both officers returned fire, and the man fled.

The officers pursued the suspect, and the chase ended at 4th Street and Davis Avenue. The man failed to comply with the officers’ request to surrender, leading to the involvement of the LCPD and the New Mexico State Police SWAT teams. The LCPD Hostage Negotiation Team also responded to get the suspect to surrender peaceably.

Two hours into the negotiations, the suspect stopped speaking with the negotiators. The police then introduced a chemical agent into the man’s vehicle to get him to surrender. The suspect alighted from the car afterward. However, the man appeared to reach back into his car, and several officers opened fire, striking the suspect.

Medical personnel attended to the man, but he died at the scene. The investigators said they found a handgun in the area the suspect was reaching. A male civilian who sustained injuries in the shootout received treatment at University Medical Center in El Paso. He was in stable condition at the time of the press release.
